Hi folks! I've got some quick updates on a couple of current shows and events, plus a report on the huge whack o' new musicals coming our way in the coming months from the Arts Club and Playhouse!
The Forbidden Phoenix
On now and running for a little more than a week longer, this adventure/martial arts musical looks to be like nothing else you've ever seen on stage! And my friend Linda Sum is in it, so double the reason to go check it out. Details are on the calendar at www.vancouvermusicals.com. Also, you can watch their awesome promo video here!
In Tune Conference
This conference is intended to "engage in a community-wide consideration and celebration of how we currently develop new musicals in Canada, and what kind of scenarios might encourage morework and greater success and profile for work created." Sounds mighty worthy, and comprises some very rewarding Masterclasses and panel discussions. But personally I'm most excited about the two by-donation panels on May 1: one on auditioning for musical theatre, and another on the history of musical theatre in Canada. More info on those events here, and get the full conference deets at www.touchstonetheatre.com.
Playhouse and Arts Club seasons
Well, the ol' Calendar got a major update with the recent announcements of next season's shows by the Vancouver Playhouse and the Arts Club. Nine, count 'em nine new musical productions (not however including "Nine", sadly, or perhaps not so sadly) will grace the stages of these venerable companies over the coming 14 months.
Added shows include:
From the Playhouse:
THE TOSCA CAF (October 2011)
LA CAGE AUX FOLLES (Nov-Dec 2011)
From the Arts Club:
NEXT TO NORMAL
BLOOD BROTHERS (Nov-Dec 2011)
WHITE CHRISTMAS, THE MUSICAL (Dec 2011)
HIGH SOCIETY (May-June 2012)
BUDDY: THE BUDDY HOLLY STORY (July-Aug 2012)
DO YOU WANT WHAT I HAVE GOT? A CRAIGSLIST CANTATA (Jan-Feb 2012)
XANADU (Jun-Aug 2012)
Personally, I will be counting the hours till June of 2012, and spending the intervening months hand-sewing extra sequins on my silver jumpsuit and oiling my roller skates!
As always, check the VMTC for full dates 'n details.
Well, that was a pretty major update. I'm going to go lie down and rest up for all these great shows!
All the best and thanks for supporting Vancouver's thriving musical theatre scene!
