13, the musical, has been recognized as a "Pick of the Fringe" for the 2010 Vancouver International Fringe Festival. Featuring the youngest cast ever in the history of the Festival and produced by Awkward Stage Productions - a brand-new Vancouver-based production company - the recognition follows an incredible run at this year’s Vancouver Fringe Festival, where they sold out every show after opening night – in advance!
Six Pick of the Fringe winners were announced Sunday night at the Fringe Awards Ceremony at Performance Works.
13 received the most votes in the provincial category, and joining them at the Waterfront will be Wanderlust (International), Dr. Horrible: Sing Along Blog (National), and three staff picks this year: Lucky 9, Freud vs. His Ego and Antoine Feval.
David Jordan, Executive Director of the Vancouver Fringe, says that Awkward Stage Productions’ staging of 13 “has been such an inspiring story” and he’s glad they’re in the Pick of the Fringe. The cast, crew and musicians for the production are all youth from Vancouver and the Lower Mainland. The Junior cast are aged 12 – 17, and the Senior cast are aged 15-18.
Disappointed fans, Fringers and theatre goers who were unable to get a ticket during the Fringe will be delighted to hear that they now have another chance to see one of these incredible young casts on Friday, September 24 at 7:00 p.m. (Senior Cast) and Saturday, September 25 at 3:30 p.m. (Junior Cast). Tickets are $18 and are on sale now at www.vancouverfringe.com
BUT THAT’S NOT ALL! Thanks to the extraordinary support of the Norman Rothstein Theatre, 13 will perform there Thanksgiving weekend, Thurs. Oct. 7 through 11! So even more opportunities to see this hilarious, high energy musical and these super talented youth!
Evan is plucked by his divorcing mother from his idyllic existence in NY and plunked down in the middle of nowhere Indiana…just weeks before he turns 13. A wickedly funny portrayal of a young hero battling the dark forces of gossip and geeks, bullies and cliques, parents and freaks….all while trying to throw the best bash the Midwest has ever seen and rake in the cool he desperately needs. Or does he? Witty and clever, 13 is a coming of age that no one wants to celebrate and everyone wants to attend. Relatable by everyone who has toiled their way through crushing adolescence, but whom better to portray these hilariously suffering pre-pubescent then those currently locked in the throes of it!!! Teens by teens because who can do it better!
