From acclaimed Vancouver-born composer-lyricist Daniel Maté comes a funny and deeply moving contemporary song cycle about longing and belonging. Winner of the Cole Porter Award for Excellence in Music and Lyrics, The Longing and the Short of It depicts six people of various ages, all searching urgently for a sense of lasting connection. Whether trying to connect with someone else or with themselves, their search is sometimes heartbreaking, often hilarious, and always relatable, as channeled through Maté’s witty, catchy, sophisticated yet highly accessible theatre songs.
The show’s author, Daniel Maté, writes:
The Longing and The Short Of It is the sort of show that’s sometimes called a “revue”, sometimes a “song cycle”, but I don’t think either term really captures it. Nor is it a concert. It’s a theatre piece that features 18 of my theatre songs, written from 1999 to 2017, in a variety of sounds and styles. (One of the best compliments I ever got about the show was from someone in Florida who claimed to not be into musicals and couldn’t understand why she loved the songs so much. Nothing against showtunes, but I love bridging the gap between folks who love them and folks who, well, not so much.)
Taken together, these songs tell a story about modern people, adults at various stages of life, trying to connect; trying to feel okay about themselves; trying to win someone over or keep someone around; trying to self-improve despite their own self’s resistance to improvement. People being people: neurotic, stubborn, vulnerable, skeptical, hopeful, ridiculous, flawed, beautiful.
The characters remind me of me, and I hope they’ll remind you of you too. \
“Daniel’s songs are a combination of jazz, classical music and rock, made thrilling by his unique voice. He makes dazzingly audacious choices in his music and lyrics that always feel surprising yet inevitable.”
