PSP and Touchstone Theatre are bringing you something exciting this fall: a brand-new Canadian musical! The Best Laid Plans is based on the award-winning novel by Terry Fallis, a brilliant Canadian political satire which won the Stephen Leacock Medal for Humour in 2008 and went on to win CBC’s Canada Reads in 2011, the theme of which was “Essential Canadian novel of the decade.”
The story takes place in and around Ottawa during the run-up to a federal election. As his last assignment before leaving the Hill, Liberal speechwriter Daniel Addison is tasked with finding a candidate to run — and lose — in an air-tight Conservative riding. In desperation, Daniel makes a deal with Angus McClintock, an irascible Scottish engineer who allows his name to stand on the ballot but wants nothing more to do with it. A perfect fit … unless Angus wins…
Veteran playwright Vern Thiessen, himself a Governor General’s Award-winner, is writing the libretto. Score and lyrics are being created by the brilliant young team of Ben Elliott and Anton Lipovetsky. Touchstone Artistic Director Katrina Dunn is dramaturge on the project, and PSP’s Co-Artistic Producer Peter Jorgensen will direct.
